The Regulatory Reform (Fire Order) 2005 sets out the regulations that governs the use of fire extinguishers for large commercial buildings across England and Wales. With very few exceptions, you will find that nearly every large commercial building must adhere to these fire extinguisher regulations set out within The Regulatory Reform (Fire Order) 2005.

  • How Many Fire Extinguishers Does A Large Commercial Premises Need?

In accordance with part 8 of the BS 5306, the owner of a large commercial premises should have at least two Class A fire extinguishers installed. This is the very minimum amount, and it must be 2 Class A fire extinguishers per floor. As a rough guide, it is recommended that you have a 13a rated fire extinguisher to cover 200sqm of space. The large your commercial premises, the more fire extinguishers that will be required.

  • Which Fire Extinguishers Are Required In Large Commercial Properties?

The standard fire extinguishers required in large commercial premises are Class A fire extinguishers. This is because these are the correct fire extinguishers for wood, paper and textiles. These are the the common causes or fuels of fire in a commercial space.

Dependent on your business, you may also require additional fire extinguishers for other types of fires. For example, if you have kitchens within your commercial premises where deep fat fryers are used then you will need wet chemical fire extinguishers. If there is a gas risk within your commercial premises, you will need a dry powder fire extinguisher. Class D power fire extinguishers are used for commercial properties with the fire risk from flammable metals. Meanwhile, foam extinguishers are required for tackling liquid fires.
