There are various types of fire extinguishers for different types of fires. Each fire extinguisher comes with different rules so we highly recommend that you read the instructions on the fire extinguishers when they are installed. However the general method to operate a fire extinguisher is known as P-A-S-S.

This is as follows;

P – Pull

Pull the pin from the fire extinguisher. This will break the seal. The fire extinguisher will then be ready for use.

A – Aim

Aim the fire extinguisher to point towards the base of the fire. Stand at a safe distance from the fire when you do this.

S – Squeeze

Squeeze the handle and lever slowly and in a controlled way. This will discharge the extinguisher at the fire.

S – Sweep

Sweep the fire extinguisher from side to side. This will help ensure that you the substance from the fire extinguisher reaches all of the fire.

A typical fire extinguisher will last around 10 seconds. This is 10 seconds of discharge time. Make sure that the fire extinguishers used to put out the fire are recharged after use. This means that they will be ready to go again if there was to be another fire.

According to research fire extinguishers prevent over 1,600 injuries every year in the UK. Fire extinguishers also save on average 24 lives every year.
