JG Pears Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant, Newark: Case Study

Jensen Security and Fire Systems have recently completed the design and installation system at JG Pears Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant.

JG Pears built the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant to provide steam and electricity to its animal rendering facility at Low Marnham, Newark, Nottinghamshire. It generates renewable energy, exporting its excess electrical power to the National Grid. The facility replaces over 90 per cent of the fossil fuels currently used in the rendering process with meat and bone meal (MBM), a sustainable alternative that has a calorific value of the same magnitude as coal, saving over 150,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. MBM can also be sourced more locally than the fuels currently used, which in turn reduces carbon emissions from transport and transport miles.

The CHP Plant is brand new purpose built building, and the fire alarm panel equipment specified and recommended for the new premises was Notifier by Honeywell.

Notifier by Honeywell is a state-of-the-art intelligent fire detection and alarm system which can be tailored to a specific building, whatever its function. Notifier works with a network of 50 independent fire installation, commissioning and maintenance companies, one of which is Jensen Security and Fire Systems. On this occasion, Honeywell recommended Jensen Security and Fire Systems to JG Pears to design and install and commission the fire alarm.  Engineers at Jensen have completed a comprehensive training programme and have had direct access to extensive product, technical and application support. JG Pears had the assurance that they were working with a company that boasts the experience and expertise specific to the challenge of the CHP plant.

The works took 6 weeks to complete. 7 aspirating panels were installed. A variety of challenges were presented; because of the nature and environment of the buildings (boiler houses and turbine buildings) a number of health and safety risks were evident. The design of the fire alarm itself had a complex cause and effect design by Jensen Security and Fire Systems in co-ordination with JG Pears representative. The fire alarm system specified was a Notifier ID3000 fire alarm control panel networked with an existing Kentec panel in JG Pears original factory unit.
