Considerations Of Fire Safety For Warehouses

Did you know that in recent years there has been a dramatic spoke in warehouse fires within the UK.  This is why fire safety for warehouses is so important. Zurich UK are an insurer of warehouses and completed some research and analysed this. The research found that between the years of 2021 and 2022 the number of fires in warehouses and bilk storage premises soared by 25%.

There was a total of 322 fires in warehouses and bulk storage units between 2021 and 2022. In the previous period this was 256 fires. The number of accidental warehouse fires in the UK grew rose from 228 last period to 276 this period, which is 21% growth. However, the number of deliberate warehouse fires jumped by 64% from last period to this period, from 28 to 46.

Experts have been looking into these warehouses, the reasons for warehouse fires and considerations for fire safety in warehouses. They believe that due to the recent explosion in the e-commerce world, older buildings are now being used as warehouses. This shift of adapting older buildings is largely to blame for the increate in warehouse fires. This is because sufficient new space isn’t available and older buildings are proven to pose a greater fire risk.

Between 2010 and 2021, the fire crews in the UK attended around 3,400 warehouse fires. Out of these, 49% of the warehouses did not have fire alarms. Worryingly, only just over 6% of the warehouses had working sprinkler systems installed.
