Summer Security Tips To Keep Your Home Safe

Summer is definitely, finally, on its way. The skies are blues and the weather is warmer. While you may be excitedly planning your holidays for the summer break. The burglars are excitedly waiting for you to leave out the tell-tale signs that you’re on holiday. Signs that show they’re ‘welcome’ to drop in.

In this blog post we have put together some top summer security tips to keep your home safe and secure. Whether you are relaxing in the back garden, sleeping coolly at night or on holiday, these are some summer security tips to consider.

  • While it is tempting to leave doors and windows open so a breeze goes through the house when you’re relaxing in the garden, this is an open invite to thieves. An average of 30% of home burglaries each year is through open windows or doors. Make sure you lock your doors and windows whether you’re sleeping at night, relaxing in the garden or just popping out.
  • When you’re excited to go on holiday or to the beach for the day it can be easy to forget to set the alarm. Put a note by the door so you are reminded to set the intruder alarm as you leave the house each day. Setting your security alarm is something that can be easily overlooked. However, it is a really important part of your home security.
  • Tell a trusted neighbour that you are away. Tell them to park on your drive if they can, or even to pop round and open / close curtains got example. This will make your home looked lived in. This means burglars will be unable to tell if you are on holiday or not. Getting your neighbour to clear the post from your front door is a good idea. A build up of post is a tell-tale sign that you’re not home.
  • If you don’t have a neighbour that can pop round and turn your lights on and off in the evening then consider leaving a few lights on. Alternatively pop your lights on a timer so it looks like someone is home in the evenings.

The other thing to avoid is posting your holiday on social media. While it may be tempting to show everyone the gorgeous beach, your latest topped up tan photo or the amazing time you are having, you need to avoid it. These photos will just tell everyone that you are on holiday and your home is empty.

We hope you follow these Summer Security Tips and your home is safe while you are away.
