It looked at the perception of effectiveness of burglary deterrents. This is where it gets more interesting, it was “according to burglars”. This research involved burglars as the respondents to the survey.
- 33% of burglars from committing a crime by people walking nearby.
- 37% of burglars from committing a crime by a lack of easy and available escape route.
- 39% of burglars from committing a crime by a visible security sign stating the building was secured.
- 40% of burglars from committing a crime by the proximity of the property to neighbours.
- 41% of burglars from committing a crime by road traffic nearby.
- 46% of burglars from committing a crime by a police officer or police car nearby.
- 51% of burglars from committing a crime by a car in the driveway of the home or business.
- 51% of burglars from committing a crime by a dog inside the property.
- 53% of burglars from committing a crime by people inside the business property or home.
- 55% of burglars from committing a crime by a clear burglar alarm on the outside of the property.
- 58% of burglars from committing a crime by visible cameras or CCTV surveillance outside of the business property or home.
Some of these things you cannot control. For example, you don’t know if there will be people or cars passing by when a burglar considers entering your home. You can’t guarantee people will be in your home or a car will be on your drive when a burglar wants to commit a crime on your home.
However, when it comes to burglar alarms and CCTV surveillance cameras – you can rest assured they will be there if someone chooses to commit a crime on your home or business.
